Today I was delighted to finish off a big order of assorted wash bags for Hampstead shore 'Bubbles & Light'. This lovely shop specialises in candles, soap and bath & body products. All their products are handmade, natural, use ethically sourced ingredients, and importantly are all British. The majority of their suppliers are small cottage industries - like me! This brings my tally of shops to 31 :-)
This week in a welcome departure from my usual use of funky printed quilting fabric I had a play around with some Vintage fabric instead. A customer had commissioned me to come up with a set that was a cross between Liberty and William Morris with a silky lining!
I had a rummage through my 'stash' and happily found a beautiful piece of vintage stuff that I'd hidden away a couple of years ago with the intent of turning it into evening bags.
I enjoyed working with the fabric so much that when I found out that it was the client's birthday, I decided to make her a little 'mini bag' complete with pocket mirror in a monogrammed case as a surprise birthday present.
The client (who is a silversmith) was delighted with the set and immediately started rummaging in HER stash for some Vintage brooches to pin on the bags!
For a while now I've felt that my personalised bags needed to be presented in a gift box to make them even more special. It's taken me a while to source the perfect type of box and ribbon but here they are and I'm so pleased with the effect.
From now on, all my personalised bags will be presented in one of these boxes, but they will also be available to order with any bag for an extra £2
This week I'm going to be very busy creating stock for a lovely new stockist based in Stow on the Wold. Vivant Boutique (5 Brewery Yard, Sheep Street) specialise in handmade arts and crafts all personally sourced by the owner Jill Lawrence. I'm very honoured to have been chosen by Jill and look forward to supplying her!
Today I dragged my daughter into town to go and marvel at the site of one of my 'Girl in Pink' wash bags in the window of my favourite local gift shop - 'Spice' in Cranbrook. The owner certainly knows how to make a beautiful Mothers Day window display!
A customer recently asked me to make her a bespoke pouch for her Filofax to go in. I love making bespoke items as it gives me a break from making makeup and wash bags and often it leads to a whole new product line - and that is exactly what happened in this case!
On receiving her pouch the customer was so pleased with it that she posted it on facebook and Instagram and within minutes I was getting requests to make more! I've now added it to my website and plan to go on and make more Filofax items. In the digital world it's so nice to know that there is whole group of people out there still embracing paper!
I decided to send one of my exclusive Wonder Women make up bags to the Deputy Editor of Grazia magazine - she loved it - and tweeted about it!
It's been a very busy start to the new year as within the last two weeks I've been approached by no less than three lovely new stockists!
The first is Bath Bombs & Shower Caps, a shop specialising in handmade bathroom products and accessories, based near the lovely city of Bath (where I was born incidentally). I've been very busy making up a large order of wash bags for them
The other two approaches were from online shops: The Early Years Boutique and Melissa Ann. I am now busily supplying them with photographs and product details for their websites
Just before Christmas I was approached by the owner of a Guest House in our village and asked to make some bespoke bedroom accessories for their Guest Rooms. The lady in question loved the 'French Journal' fabric by Michael Miller that I had used to make a wash bag. She asked me to make some tissue box covers and various sizes of Hairdryer bags.
The latter was easy as I'd already designed a pattern in the past but I'd never made a tissue box cover! After googling various methods I did my usual thing and came up with my own method and here it is!
I design, sew and sell quirky makeup and wash bags from my home workshop surrounded by orchards in Kent. www.KatherineThompsonHandmade.com
